Basic functions of springs

Springs are widely used in daily life. Their main functions include: measuring, resetting, driving, buffering, sounding, and pressing function. Now let’s show more details about these features as below:

Main Functions

  • Control the movement of machinery, such as valve spring in internal combustion engine, control spring in clutch, etc.
  • Absorb vibration and impact energy, such as buffer springs under cars and train carriages, vibration absorption springs in couplings, etc.
  • Store and output energy as power, such as clock springs, springs in firearms, etc.
  • It is used as a force measuring element, such as force gauge, springs in spring scale, etc. The ratio of load and deformation of springs is called spring stiffness. The greater the stiffness, the harder the spring.

Springs are elastic element widely used in the mechanical and electronic industries. When loaded, the springs can produce large elastic deformation, which converts mechanical or kinetic energy into deformation energy. After unloading, the deformation of the springs disappear and return to their original state, the deformation energy is converted into mechanical or kinetic energy.

【Measurement Functions】

As we know that within the elastic limit, the elongation (or contraction) of the springs is proportional to the external force. Use the property of springs to make spring scale.

Resetting Functions

The springs deforms under the action of external force. After the external force is removed, the spring can recover. Many tools and equipment are reset by this springs’ property. For example, many building doors are equipped with reset springs on the hinges. When people enter and exit, the doors will automatically reset. People also use this function to make automatic umbrellas, automatic pencils and other articles, which are very convenient. In addition, all kinds of buttons and keys also need reset springs.

Driving Functions

Mechanical clocks and windup toys are driven by tightening the clockworks. When the clockworks are tightened, the springs produce bending deformation and store certain elastic potential energy. After release, the elastic potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which is driven to rotate by the transmission device. Toy guns, starting guns and military guns also use this property of springs to work.

Buffering Functions

When springs are installed between the frames and the wheels of the locomotives and cars, the elasticity of the springs is used to reduce the bumps of the vehicle.

Sounding Functions

When the air flows through the spring holes in the harmonica and accordion, it impacts the reed, which cause the reed vibrates and makes a sound.

Compression Functions

When observing various electrical switches, will found that one head of the two contacts of the switch must be equipped with a spring to ensure that the two head are close contact and in good conduction.

If the contact is bad, the resistance at the contact will increase, the heat generated when the current passes through, and the metal at the contact will melt seriously. Both metal columns of bayonet lamp cap are equipped with springs for good contact; as for the central metal sheet of the screw lamp cap and the connecting metal sheet of all sockets are reed, and their functions are to make both sides close contact to maintain in good condition.

In the cassette tape, there is a phosphor bronze reed, which makes the magnetic head and the magnetic tape close contact when the elastic force generated by the reed’s bending deformation.

There is a long spiral spring in the stapler. Its function is to tighten the staples on the one hand. On the other hand, when the front nails are pushed out, the back nails can be sent to the front for pushing out when the nails are ready. In this way, the nails can be pushed to the front automatically until all the nails are pushed out. Many machines feed automatically, and the automatic loading of bullets in automatic rifles depends on this function of springs. In addition, clips like clothes pins, ballpoint pen, and clip on pen cover are using the compression function of spring.

It can be seen from the functions of the above springs that small springs play a great role. As long as we pay attention, we will find that many products in life have springs.

  1. Next time I read a blog, Hopefully it does not disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, however I truly believed you would have something useful to say. All I hear is a bunch of crying about something that you could possibly fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

    1. Appreciated your advice,as a new blog user, this is no doubt a valuable advice. I will try to make more better, also hope you can continue follow and give more substantive suggestions, let us do better
