What’s extension spring?
The extension spring is a helical spring that receives the axial pulling force. When the spring is not subjected to the load, the ring of the tension spring is generally tight and there is no gap between the rings. Many different terminal devices or “hooks” are used to ensure the source of the tension of the tension spring.
Like compression springs, tension springs also absorb and store energy as well as create a resistance to a pulling force.

How to measure tension spring? Pay attention to the following six elements:
- Wire Diameter: Wire diameteris found by placing your calipers on the wire.
- Outer Diameter: Outer diameteris measured by placing your dial calipers on the outside of the coil’s width.
- Free length of spring: To measurethe free length of spring, place your calipers on the full length of the spring.
- Length inside hooks: The length inside hooks is calculated by either measuring the full spring outside hook to outside hook and subtracting two wire diameters or by adding the hook lengths to the body length. Free lengthminus two wire diameters = Length Inside Hooks
- Hook lengths: Hook lengths are measured from within the inner diameter of the hooks
- Body Length: The free length minustwo hook lengths.
